14,000 Bottles of Cheap Wine Seized in Italy After 3 Die
Police investigating the poisoning deaths of three people seized about 14,000 bottles of wine in supermarkets in northern Italy, Milan court officials said Wednesday.
Police said the bottles were confiscated because Benito Casetto, 51, died in a Milan hospital Friday after drinking apparently adulterated wine.
Armando Biogni, 48, and Renzo Cappelletti, 56, died of wine poisoning in this northern city earlier this month and were thought to have drunk the same kind of wine, police said.
Seven other people who drank the same type of wine were taken to Niguarda Hospital on Wednesday, police said. Doctors said three of them were treated and released. The others remained hospitalized in satisfactory condition.
Judge Alberto Nobili said authorities are investigating a wine merchant and his son who produced the cheap red wine.
They might face charges of multiple manslaughter and commercial fraud, the judge said.
