Jailed Sicilian financier Michele Sindona, who is in a coma and close to death, had taken or been given cyanide, Justice Minister Mimo Martinazzoli said today.

Martinazzoli, responding in parliament to demands for a statement on Sindona, said tests on the financier’s blood had confirmed traces of potassium cyanide.

He said he assumed full responsibility for the fact that cyanide had been smuggled into the top security jail at Voghera in northern Italy where Sindona, 65, a former adviser to the Vatican, was held under constant surveillance by guards and television cameras.

The minister said that according to information from Voghera, a guard heard him say before collapsing: “I have been poisoned.”

Last Tuesday a Milan court sentenced Sindona to life imprisonment for ordering the murder of a lawyer appointed to wind up the affairs of his Italian bank.
