Kuwait Rejects Plan to Let Women Vote

KUWAIT — For the second time in less than a year, legislators in this small, oil-rich Arab state on Thursday rejected a proposal to let women vote.
Meneizel al Anazi, chairman of Parliament’s interior and defense affairs committee, told reporters the majority of the committee turned down a proposal to amend general election laws and permit universal suffrage.
He said it would be premature for women to get the vote.
Al Anazi said the rejection was based on a “fatwah,” or a religious ruling, issued by the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs barring women from holding top government jobs and voting in general elections.
