A convicted killer escaped from the California Men’s Colony by hiding in brush and cutting through two security fences, according to officials who said he is dangerous.

Helicopters were called out Thursday to help in the search for Scott Robinson, 20, who was serving 15 years to life for a drug-related second-degree murder conviction in San Diego County, prison spokesman Ed Martin said.

Robinson, who was discovered missing at 10:15 p.m. Wednesday, had been held in the high-security East Facility.

He apparently hid in a landscaped area, tore through one fence and then cut through a double fence that surrounds the prison, Martin said. Authorities had not immediately determined what was used to cut the fence.

Martin said Robinson was housed in “the quad where most psychiatric-oriented people are housed” but declined to comment on the escapee’s mental health.

Robinson was described as 5-feet-6, 130 pounds, with red hair.

Robinson had also been convicted of receiving stolen property. He entered the California prison system last November and arrived at the Men’s Colony Feb. 4, Martin said.
