Army Barracks Renovated at Long Distance

Three barracks, housing 1,000 men and women at Ft. Irwin, a U.S. Army desert training center near Barstow, have been renovated in a $6.5-million project by C. E. Wylie Construction Co., San Diego, that involved extensive long-distance commuting.

Renovating the three buildings included all new interior partitions and plaster, floor coverings, heating and cooling systems, new windows and new electrical wiring.

There are now 245 rooms; each three-story building has a basement, according to Don Costello of the Wylie firm.

“Plasterers, painters and steel workers traveled Interstate 15 from the San Diego area for the past year and a half to work on the buildings,” Costello said, adding that the commuting involved about 50 workers.
