Pair Can’t Post Bond in $7-Million Robbery
Two suspects arrested in Puerto Rico were ordered jailed Monday in connection with a $7-million Wells Fargo robbery, the third largest cash heist in the nation’s history.
U.S. District Judge T. Emmet Clarie set surety bond for Roberto Maldonado-Rivera, 49, at $200,000 and for Antonio Camacho-Negron, 40, at $150,000. Both were ordered jailed when they failed to post the required $25,000 in cash, U.S. Atty. Stanley A. Twardy said. They were extradited from Puerto Rico on Saturday.
FBI investigators believe the 1983 robbery at a Wells Fargo depot in West Hartford, Conn., was coordinated by Los Macheteros, an alleged terrorist group advocating Puerto Rican independence from the United States.
Should they post bond, Camacho-Negron was ordered to remain within Connecticut, New York or Puerto Rico, and Maldonado-Rivera was restricted to those three areas and Washington, D.C., where he practices law, Twardy said.
