On Aid to the Contras in Nicaragua

Share

I am one of those poor souls of draft age who would be placed on the front lines of any approaching “Vietnam” in Central America, and I have a much greater stake in the matter than any aging member of Congress.

To begin with, the Reagan Administration is not accusing any government figures as being communist. They are merely pointing out the obvious fact that their attitudes toward the contra aid are furthering communist interests. And in this case we are definitely talking about hostile interests detrimental to the security of the United States.

I am the last person who wants to fight another Vietnam in Central America, and this is precisely why supporting Nicaraguan forces is so important. Once a Soviet foothold is firmly in place there is no counterrevolution and little hope for change. I do not wish to see myself or my children fighting against Soviet weapons in southern Mexico because Congress does not have the guts to help a troubled people help themselves.
