U.S. District Judge Walter L. Nixon Jr., only the second federal judge convicted in office, was sentenced to five years in prison today for perjury.

Nixon, 57, could have been sentenced to a maximum 10 years in prison and fined $20,000. U.S. District Judge James Meredith allowed Nixon to remain free under bond pending appeal. Nixon was convicted Feb. 9 of lying to a special grand jury when he said he and a former county district attorney never discussed the drug-smuggling case of the son of a wealthy businessman.
