About 1,000 protesters against South Africa’s policy of racial segregation staged a demonstration at the University of California, Berkeley, and at one point an entrance to the campus administration building was blocked. No police were seen. The demonstration was sponsored by several student groups, which called on the UC system to rid itself of investments in firms doing business in South Africa. The protest included a number of mock shanties to represent the shacks that are homes for many blacks in South African townships.
