Anaheim : OK Given to Buy Gear for Utility Emergencies
When a storm blew through the city last month, tearing off a handful of roofs and causing overall havoc, City Manager William O. Talley did not have the authority to contract for additional equipment or services.
But with the City Council’s blessing Tuesday, Talley will now have the authority to quickly purchase new equipment, materials, labor and services in the event of emergencies requiring immediate work on the utility systems.
The council also authorized negotiations with seven companies in case independent contractors are needed for emergency situations.
“In the past, there have been occasions when the city’s utility systems have sustained damage of such magnitude . . . that the permanent city crews were unable to maintain and / or restore service within a reasonable time,” Public Utilities General Manager Gordon W. Hoyt said in a letter to the council.
