A detective who devoted himself for five years to a futile search for Etan Patz--the child whose disappearance focused national attention on missing children--committed suicide, police said Wednesday.

Sgt. William Butler, 56, a 31-year police veteran, allegedly fired a single bullet from his handgun into his head. He was found dead Monday in the kitchen of his Brooklyn home, Officer Janice Swinney said.
