Rome Threatens to Close McDonald’s

ROME — Rome’s city council threatened Friday to suspend the license of a booming McDonald’s restaurant next to the historic Spanish Steps.
The council unanimously approved a motion urging authorities to determine whether they had the legal power to temporarily close the fast food restaurant that opened March 20.
The restaurant, fitted with bullet-proof glass, is the first McDonald’s to open in Rome and reportedly is the world’s largest McDonald’s store, seating 450 people.
The motion claimed the store violates safety, hygiene and planning permission regulations because of the large number of customers who spill out onto the square in front of the fabled steps.
