A man sleeping near three companions by a campfire on Fiesta Island was killed early Saturday when an out-of-control car plowed into the group, a police spokesman said.

The man, whose identity was not released pending notification of relatives, died at the scene, said Bill Robinson of the San Diego Police Department.

The car, driven by a 15-year-old girl, was traveling east faster than 60 m.p.h. on Fiesta Island Road in Mission Bay Park when it hit the group of men about 4 a.m., he said. After hitting the men, the car continued forward, striking three parked vehicles before coming to a stop about 300 yards from the men.

Two of the men were taken by Life Flight to UC San Diego Medical Center, and the third was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Robinson said. Their injuries range from minor to serious, he said.

The driver, who was not identified because of her age, was booked on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit and run. She was later released to the custody of her mother.

Leo Cunningham, 20, of San Diego, who was a passenger and who owns the car, was booked into County Jail on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He is being held on $5,500 bail.
