The State : Peace March Halts Again

Share

About 325 activists on a cross-country march for nuclear disarmament rested in the California desert community of Border Town while awaiting permission to camp at a casino campground just inside Nevada. It was the second time in three days that the oft-delayed march ground to halt while leaders worked out logistical problems. Marchers hope to walk the 10 miles to the Pop’s Oasis casino in Jean, Nev. “Pop’s requires liability waivers from each of the marchers, and our lawyer, Dan Chavez, is out trying to take care of that,” said Elizabeth Fairchild, a spokeswoman for the marchers. The marchers were camped along Interstate 15, about one mile from Whiskey Pete’s Casino in Stateline, Nev., and 10 miles from Pop’s. The march has been plagued by internal disputes and lack of money since it began March 1. The marchers hope to reach Washington on their 3,200-mile trek for peace by Nov. 15.
