Digital Equipment introduced its newest computer.

The VAX 8500 is a mid-size mainframe computer that Digital said provides twice the performance in about one-third the size of the company’s previous products. The machines, which begin at $260,000, are part of a growing array of products that the company has positioned against market leader IBM.
