Deukmejian Sees Chance of Tax Rebate
Gov. George Deukmejian said today that he foresees no increases in vehicle registration fees or gasoline taxes after the November elections but said a rebate to taxpayers is “a good possibility.”
The Republican governor, running for a second four-year term, said the state’s voter-approved limit on government spending could force a return of revenues to taxpayers during the next gubernatorial administration.
“It looks like that might be a good possibility of happening,” he said at a Capitol news conference.
He also dismissed the prediction of Legislative Analyst William Hamm that motor vehicles fees and the state’s 9-cent-per-gallon gas tax will rise after this year’s elections.
“I haven’t seen anything right now indicating that there will be a need to increase those fees . . . no reason for suggesting that those taxes should be increased,” Deukmejian said.
