Hazardous Fluids to Be Removed

Los Angeles County health officials are scheduled to remove 37 barrels of hazardous and flammable fluids from a Calabasas field today, authorities said.

Deputies from the Malibu sheriff’s station discovered the 55-gallon drums at 5:40 p.m. Thursday inside a fenced-off field in the 23900 block of Calabasas Road, Deputy Roxanna Schuchman said. The field is about 100 yards south of the Ventura Freeway.

The drums, which were dumped illegally, contain motor oils, solvents and transmission fluids, Fire Department Capt. Don Kanallakan said. Although several were leaking a black, tar-like substance, health officials determined that there was no immediate danger and decided to wait until today to remove the drums, Kanallakan said.
