Tuesday is Date for Homeowners’ Exemption Filings

Tuesday is the deadline for filing 1986 homeowners’ exemption claim forms, according to Los Angeles County Assessor Alexander H. Pope. To be eligible for the exemption, a person must have owned and lived in his or her residence on the March 1 lien date, he added.

Pope emphasized that Tuesday’s filing deadline applies only to persons who have acquired a house or condominium in the last year; homeowners who have previously filed for the exemption need not refile.

“Every year we are concerned about the large number of homeowners who appear to be eligible but do not claim this exemption,” Pope said. “There are about 150,000 such properties in Los Angeles County and the $7,000 exemption is worth about $75 off property tax bills.”
