“Santana’s Greatest Hits.” Columbia. Before frittering away his talent on jazz-rock fusion and pop-rock pap, guitarist Carlos Santana headed a superb Latin-rock band in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. This 1974 collection, including “Oye Como Va” and “Black Magic Woman,” truly is the best of Santana. On CD the guitar solos have incredible presence. Because the details of the arrangements are much clearer and the upper registers so much sharper, these pieces have a more full-bodied quality. This CD makes you yearn for the Santana of the good old days.
