Young GOP Backs Hope for Congress Seat

Share

The California Young Republicans, an organization of party members 35 and younger, has unanimously endorsed Tony Hope in the GOP primary for the 21st Congressional District seat.

The 260 members voted to endorse Hope, a lawyer and son of entertainer Bob Hope, at the organization’s statewide convention in Los Angeles this weekend. According to Hope’s press aide, the endorsement represented the first time that the organization has ever backed a candidate who was not running for a statewide position.

The Young Republicans’ announcement of support was the second major endorsement of the GOP primary race in which Hope is pitted against Elton Gallegly, the mayor of Simi Valley, and Tom La Porte, a stockbroker from Thousand Oaks. Last month, the California Republican Assembly, the state’s largest volunteer political organization, endorsed Gallegly.

The congressional seat is being vacated by Rep. Bobbi Fielder (R-Northridge) who is running for the U.S. Senate.

Hope said the endorsement was especially gratifying because about half of the voters in the 21st district are in their early 40s or younger.
