The state has shut down three of Kerman’s five water wells because of uranium contamination. Tests showed that radioactivity in the three wells exceeded 40 picocuries per liter, the technical state “action level.” Uranium in Kerman’s other two wells was below the action level, and the water is considered safe to drink, said Richard Haberman, sanitary engineer for the state Department of Health Services. Those two wells will be able to meet the western Fresno County community’s water needs, at least for now, City Administrator Dan Ayala said.
