The U.N. Disaster Relief Organization, declaring that Haiti is in a disastrous state of economic deprivation, launched an appeal Tuesday for urgent international humanitarian assistance for the Caribbean republic.

“The consequences of recent internal disturbances, compounded by a critical economic situation, have left the country in a state of extreme need,” a report from the Geneva-based agency said. Haiti has been the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country, and hunger and malnutrition are widespread there. A huge gap has existed between a few rich families and the impoverished majority.

The U.N. group is sending a delegate to Haiti in the next few days to work out details and priorities of aid with the new government of Lt. Gen. Henri Namphy and with officials of the U.N. Development Program.
