A baby born in Detroit Sunday is believed to be the first test-tube baby born to a surrogate mother, Mount Sinai Medical Center officials said in Cleveland. In most cases, it’s the infertile woman who carries the baby. The 7-pound baby was born in an unidentified Detroit hospital, said Mount Sinai spokeswoman Ruth Jacobowitz. The woman, 22, agreed to bear the child as a favor to a childless New York couple who are friends, Jacobowitz said. The people involved remained unidentified.
