“CLOSE ONE SAD EYE.” Kommunity FK. Independent Project.

This L.A. band’s favorite theme is death, with sex coming in a close second. Nothing wrong with that, but these purveyors of doom-gloom rock also subject the listener to an eerie 35 minutes of music that becomes more grating with each spin. Patrick Mata’s scratching guitar and none-too-comforting vocals creep along side by side with Margaret Arana’s ominous (and colorless) synthesizer playing. What this band needs is an inkling of a sense of humor a la the Cramps or some whimsical melodies like the ones that keep the Cure from sinking in the deep end. The only time KFK seems to let loose is on the sole instrumental track--appropriately titled “Debauchery.”
