A two-alarm fire that started about 4:40 a.m. Saturday in a carport caused the evacuation of 20 apartment residents at 2103 Mrytle Ave.

The blaze spread from the carport to a rear upstairs apartment, said Battalion Chief Frank Scottie. No one was injured, he said, but the fire caused an estimated $25,000 damage to the apartment and a loss estimated at $4,000 loss to contents.

The Orange County Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing 15 of the evacuated residents with food and lodging at motels in Santa Ana and Garden Grove until Monday.

Scottie, reading from the Fire Department’s report of the blaze, said, “The cause (of the fire) is undetermined and suspicious at this time.” He said that the possibility of arson is being investigated.

The carport was totally destroyed but no vehicle was in the structure. Scottie said that firefighters remained at the scene until 9:30 a.m.
