The owner of a lamp manufacturing business in Vernon was sentenced to six years in federal prison for destroying his plant in May, 1983, with explosives and fire. Assistant U.S. Atty. James Berliner said Humberto Montiel Sr., 50, formerly of La Habra, traveled to Tonopah, Nev., purchased explosives and used them to blow up the business at 4820 Alcoa Ave. The prosecutor said that just before the explosion and fire Montiel increased the amount of his insurance coverage, and afterward his children collected more than $400,000 in payments as beneficiaries.
