A guard was held hostage by an inmate for more than four hours Saturday before the prisoner was talked into surrendering, the warden of Southern Nevada Correctional Center said.

Officer Steven Settembre was taken hostage and handcuffed at 8:20 a.m. by an inmate using what was initially believed to be a knife but later turned out to be a sharpened toothbrush, said Warden Walter Luster.

The inmate was identified as Sang Moon, 21, who in October began serving a six-year term for coercion, a crime “similar to kidnaping,” Luster said.

Lt. Charles Alverez, a shift supervisor, talked the inmate into freeing the hostage at 12:35 p.m., ending the incident without injuries, Luster said.
