West Hollywood Urges Salon to Change Name

Share

The West Hollywood City Council has passed a resolution asking the owners of JAPSS, a West Hollywood hair salon, to change the controversial name.

JAPSS, an acronym of the five owners’ names, sparked protests by Japanese-American and civil rights organizations, which said that the name offends Japanese-Americans.

The owners have insisted the name was not created with any intent to offend.

The council, which has discussed the matter but has no authority over it, “strongly recommended” that JAPSS be changed.

Jerry Brennan, one of the owners, said the salon could not consider any name change “until we have the funds to change our sign.”
