John Artis, whose conviction with boxer Rubin (Hurricane) Carter for a 1966 triple murder was overturned last year, was arrested and charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine as part of a drug ring, officials in Paterson, N.J., said. Artis also was charged with receiving stolen property after police reportedly found a stolen, loaded .45-caliber gun at his Paterson home. Eleven other suspects in the alleged ring, as well as Artis’ wife, were arrested in separate raids, officials said. If convicted, Artis could be sentenced to 17 years on the two charges.
