DURHAM, N.C. —
Sen. Paula Hawkins (R-Fla.) successfully underwent her second back operation in as many weeks today at Duke University Medical Center, an aide said.
Hawkins has been hospitalized since surgery April 8 to relieve neck pain caused by injuries suffered in a car accident 20 years ago. She received only a local anesthetic in the two-hour operation today to remove a piece of disc from her lower spine to ease chronic lower-back pain. Today’s operation was unrelated to the earlier surgery, her doctors said.
