A frigid wedge of Canadian air cut across the nation’s midsection from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico today, shattering record lows, some a century old, in nearly three dozen cities across 13 states.

The temperature dropped to 24 degrees in Chicago, snapping the 1973 record of 29. Dubuque, Iowa, broke the 1873 mark with 25 degrees. Readings of 20 in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., and 48 in New Orleans also set records. The Cincinnati Reds postponed tonight’s home game against the San Diego Padres, rescheduling it for August.
