Official Says That Pistons Will Leave the Silverdome After 1987-88 Season
The Detroit Pistons will move from the Pontiac Silverdome when the team’s contract with the domed arena ends after the 1987-88 season, a Silverdome official said Wednesday.
The announcement by William Waterman, Pontiac Stadium Building Authority chairman, comes amid speculation that the NBA team would move to a proposed 20,000-seat arena in neighboring Auburn Hills.
But Jack McCloskey, the Pistons’ general manager, said Wednesday the decision to move had not been made and deferred comment to club owner William Davidson.
A Silverdome official, who asked not to be identified, said Waterman and Davidson met for four minutes Tuesday, and that “Davidson told Waterman they’re leaving.”
Davidson confirmed a few weeks ago that he is considering becoming a financial backer of the proposed arena.
Waterman has said the Silverdome would be able to survive the loss of the team by booking other events.
