Herringer New President of Transamerica

Transamerica Corp., San Francisco, on Thursday named Frank C. Herringer president. He assumes the title from James R. Harvey, who remains chairman and chief executive.

Herringer, 43, had been an executive vice president. In his new job, he will be responsible for new and existing programs in Transamerica’s insurance and financial services segments, as well as its real estate and investment activities.

Herringer joined Transamerica in 1979 as vice president and assistant to then Chairman John R. Beckett. He became a group vice president in 1981 and was named executive vice president in 1984.

“By placing the responsibility for all aspects of our ongoing operations under Frank Herringer, we are positioning ourselves to take advantage of the tremendous expansion opportunities available to us . . . through both internal growth and acquisitions,” Harvey, 51, said in a statement.

Executive Vice President Arthur E. Van Leuvan, 60, will continue to oversee Transamerica’s financial services business and will be responsible for directing the company’s previously announced plans to withdraw from the travel and manufacturing businesses.
