Jackie Joyner surpassed the American record in the women’s heptathlon Friday, totaling 6,910 points to win the two-day competition at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays, but it’s unlikely her mark will be allowed because the 100-meter hurdles had to be hand-timed.

Joyner, 24, a former UCLA star representing the World Class Athletic Club, topped the record of 6,803 points set by Jane Frederick in 1984.

On Thursday, the first day of the seven-event competition, Joyner had marks of 12.9 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, 6-1 in the high jump, 48-4 3/4 in the shotput and 23.24 in the 200 meters. That gave her 4,056 points.

On Friday, she had marks of 22-5 3/4 in the long jump, 158-5 in the javelin and 2:14.11 in the 800 meters.

Chris Branham, 23, of the L.A. Track Club, won the decathlon with a personal best of 8,159 points for the two-day event.

The meet continues today and Sunday. Among those competing Sunday are Olympic sprint champions Carl Lewis and Evelyn Ashford.

Joe Dial broke the American record in the pole vault for the third time in two weeks when he cleared 19 feet 4 inches outdoors at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla.

Dial, formerly of Oklahoma State and now an assistant coach at Oklahoma, eclipsed the mark of 19-3 1/2 he set last Sunday at El Paso, Tex. Two weeks ago, he set a record of 19-2 3/4 at Norman.

The world record is 19-8 by Sergei Bubka of the Soviet Union.

The highest vault by an American is 19-5 1/2, established indoors by Billy Olson last winter.

Borge ran 1:48.7 in the 800, and Consiglio turned in a 3:59 for the 1,600 anchor leg.

John Trautman of Monroe Woodbury in Central Valley, N.Y., highlighted prep competition when he set a national scholastic record of 8:05.8 in the 3,000-meter run. The record of 8:07.9 was set by Steve Prefontaine of Marshfield High in Coos Bay, Ore., in 1969.

Tennessee’s Sam Graddy, a 1984 Olympic silver medalist and NCAA outdoor champion, led the qualifiers for the 100-meter final, running a wind-aided 10.19. Lee McRae of Pittsburgh won his heat in 10.24.

Olympic silver medalist Danny Harris of Iowa State set a meet record of 48.28 seconds while winning the 400-meter hurdles in the Drake Relays at Des Moines, Iowa.

Harris overcame a slow start to break his own record of 48.69.
