Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race Is Slowest Ever

Share

The slowest Newport to Ensenada yacht race in the 39-year history of the event dragged to a close at 11 a.m. Monday after 381 yachts had crossed the finish line still fighting light winds that plagued the fleet for the entire 125-mile course.

There were 504 official starters Saturday at noon off Newport Beach, which means that 123 yachts gave up the ghost somewhere along the course between San Diego and Ensenada.

Late arriving skippers told of finding wind only in spots and falling into one light air hole after another.
