MONEY WOES CITED : CAPISTRANO SYMPHONY CANCELS SHOW

The Capistrano Valley Symphony has canceled its concert Sunday afternoon at the Laguna Beach High School Artists Theatre due in part to lack of financing.

The program was to have featured pianist Daniel Pollack in Gershwin’s Concerto in F, as well as Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 7.

Denny Freidenrich, development consultant for the orchestra, said the decision to cancel was made because some funds promised for past performances, though “still forthcoming,” have not been paid. However, he added, this was not the sole basis for the decision.

According to Freidenrich, the orchestra’s board of directors met Monday and approved the cancellation because “the board and some of the musicians were stretched to the limit after a busy first three months of the year.”

Founded in January, 1985, by Donn Laurence Mills to provide classical music to south county communities, the orchestra also canceled a concert last Jan. 12, citing lack of funds. The date was one of four concerts planned for the orchestra’s 1985-86 season.

Mills said of Sunday’s cancellation: “We’re trying hard to keep our equilibrium in terms of enthusiasm.

“I don’t think it (the cancellation) will have a major impact on the orchestra at this stage, however. But we do need to improve the financial base of the orchestra. We’re still new enough so that we have a lot of groundwork to do anyway.”
