Jan Kemp told a meeting of journalists that a settlement of her lawsuit against two University of Georgia officials had been reached, but she didn’t know the financial details. However, a spokesman for Georgia Gov. Joe Frank Harris said he had not heard of the settlement.

Kemp was awarded $2.58 million by a federal jury hearing her lawsuit against the officials. In the suit, she claimed she was fired from her job in the university’s remedial Developmental Studies Program for protesting favoritism toward athletes.

A federal judge later called the jury’s award oppressive and reduced it to $679,681.95. Kemp has said she would force a new trial rather than accept the reduced amount, but there have been unconfirmed reports that the state will offer a proposed settlement of $1 million.
