Orange County Roundup : UCI Meet Will Feature 3 Olympians in the 800

Former Olympians Kim Gallagher, Ruth Wysocki and Monica Joyce are among the estimated 200 athletes scheduled to compete in the New Balance Women’s Track and Field Invitational Saturday at UC Irvine.

The meet begins at 10:30 a.m.

Gallagher, Wysocki and Joyce are competing in the 800-meter race, making it the featured event. Gallagher won a silver medal in the 800 in the 1984 Games at Los Angeles. The 800 is scheduled to start at 2:05 p.m.

The javelin field includes Finland’s Tiina Lillak, the 1984 Olympic silver medalist, and Tuula Loaksalo. Rosalyn Bryant, a U.S. Olympian in 1976 and 1980, will compete in the 400-meter hurdles against Canadian Olympian Gwen Hall. Sherri Howard and Diane Williams, members of the U.S. gold-medal-winning 400-meter relay team, will compete in the sprints.

Members of the Rams will compete in a charity basketball game against the Chapman College alumni at 7 p.m. Sunday in the Hutton Sports Center to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Stanton.

Representing the Rams are LeRoy Irvin, Johnnie Johnson, Mike Lansford, Ron Brown, Charles White, Jim Collins, Doug Smith, Reggie Doss and James McDonald. Todd Hewit, assistant equipment manager, also will participate.

The Chapman alumni includes Bob Williams, Kyle Brooks, Kevin McCarthy, Tim Richards, Bert Patrick, Harlen Anderson, Trusclair Seals, Derrik Harris, Reggie Smith and Al Brown.

Tickets, $5 for adults and $2 for children under 15, can be purchased at the Chapman College Gym Sunday night or by calling the Boys and Girls Club of Stanton at 891-0740.

The Childrens Hospital of Orange County Padrinos men’s volunteer support group will stage its fifth annual Vic Braden/Choc Padrinos Tennis Tournament this weekend and next weekend at eight area tennis clubs, with the semifinals and finals to be held at the John Wayne Tennis Club in Newport Beach May 10 and 11.

An exhibition match, involving top college players, will be held Saturday at the Wayne Club, and Braden will stage a clinic for players and spectators May 11. The Padrinos invite men and women to enter the doubles tournament, which benefits more than 40,000 sick and injured children each year at Childrens Hospital.

Patti Taylor, a softball pitcher from Fountain Valley High School, and David Roth, a basketball player at Orange High, have signed letters of intent to attend Chapman College in the fall.

Taylor is 16-2 overall and has a 6-0 record in the Sunset League. She has thrown three no-hitters for the Barons and has an earned-run average of 0.22.

Roth, a second-team All-Southern Section 4-A selection, averaged 20 points and 12.9 rebounds a game last season for the Panthers. A 6-foot 5-inch forward, he is the school’s career leader in scoring and rebounding.

Several local college athletes, honored for outstanding achievement in athletic competition, academics and community involvement, have been selected as recipients of the first Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. Scholar-Athlete of the Year Awards, it was announced Thursday.

The list of men honored includes Cal State Fullerton baseball player Jef Garcia, Cal State Long Beach runner Jim Reish and UC Irvine basketball player Mike Hess. Among the women honored were Fullerton gymnast Callie Glanton, Long Beach softball player Kim Lee and UC Irvine runner Jennifer Abraham.

The second annual Orange County volleyball coaches’ clinic, featuring Albert Gasparian (Golden West College), Brian Gimmillaro (Cal State Long Beach), Mike Neese (Newport Harbor High School), Chris Voelz (University of Oregon) and a demonstration by the Cal State Fullerton women’s team, will be held Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.

Registration begins at 7:45 a.m. Clinics and demonstrations will continue throughout the day.

Run for the Roses, a community-sponsored event that will benefit high school athletics in Fountain Valley and help establish Whecha Pines, a new sports camp for wheelchair athletes in Orange County, will be held Saturday at 8 a.m. at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley.

Registration begins at 7 a.m., with the fun run starting at 8, the 5-K at 8:30 and the 10-K at 9:15. A special wheelchair division will be offered. Entry fees are $10 with a T-shirt and $5 without.

The 1986 Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation spring invitational coed softball tournament will be hosted by the City of Orange Recreation Department on May 10-11 at Hart Park, located at Glassell Street and the Garden Grove Freeway.

The Cal State Fullerton football team will finish spring practice with the inaugural “May Bowl,” an intrasquad contest at Brea-Olinda High School next Friday night at 7:30. All tickets are $5 and are available from team members and at the Titan ticket office in the school’s gym, open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. . . . Saddleback College’s Kim Dellota was named the South Coast Conference swimmer of the year. He set records in the 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events as well as the 400-yard individual medley. . . . Jenny Lee, a second-team All-State selection from South Eugene High School in Oregon, has signed a letter of intent to play women’s basketball at UC Irvine next year. . . . Eugenio “Janu” Juarez has been named women’s soccer coach at UC Irvine, replacing Matt Etchison, who recently resigned. A UCI graduate, Juarez has been the boys soccer coach at Estancia High School for the past three years. . . . Anjanette Crabb, a 5-foot 9-inch outside hitter from Huntington Beach High School, has signed a letter of intent to attend UC Irvine, said Mike Puritz, Anteater volleyball coach. Puritz said Crabb, an All-Sunset League selection last fall, will be converted to a setter next season. . . . The Saddleback Lawn Bowling Club team of Dick Talt, Don Peterson and Foz Sampson won the California State Triples Championship. The trio are from Laguna Leisure World.
