A cold front Friday brought freezing weather from the Plains to New England, dropping unseasonable wind chill readings into single digits.

Freeze or frost warnings were posted for Wisconsin, Indiana, lower Michigan, the northern mountains of West Virginia, New York, Vermont and northwestern New Jersey, the National Weather Service said.

Fargo, N.D., was the nation’s coldest spot overnight with a temperature of 26 degrees, and at least one resident was concerned about his apricot trees.

‘Just a Soft Frost’

“It was unseasonably cool,” said Don Morin of the weather service in Fargo. “We were below 32 degrees for eight hours last night. It wasn’t a killing frost, just a soft frost. That wouldn’t have taken out his (apricot) buds.”

With lows in the 30s predicted in New England overnight, plant lovers there were urged to protect new additions to their outdoor gardens.

The cold front that brought light snow, strong winds and freezing temperatures Thursday to the upper Great Lakes also whipped northwesterly winds up to 30 m.p.h. Friday and pushed wind chill readings into single digits from the Mississippi Valley to the Appalachians.
