Stained Glass Overlay Inc. said Tuesday that it has licensed a British window manufacturer to franchise its ersatz stained-glass products in the United Kingdom. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but Barry Rupp, president of the privately held Costa Mesa firm, said the British concern “paid us a lot of money.”

Real stained-glass windows involve assembling small pieces of colored glass, while the multicolored mylar sheets made by Stained Glass Overlay are affixed to clear windows to give the appearance of the real thing, Rupp said. Founded in 1974, Stained Glass Overlay sells its product domestically through a 300-member franchise network.
