The California Angels tried to persuade Anaheim last week that the city’s residents sided with the ballclub on the issue of development of the Anaheim Stadium parking lot.

The baseball team on Monday publicized the results of a survey showing that 65% of the city’s residents believe the stadium parking lot should not be developed with high-rise parking garages and office buildings and that 61% think the Angels are right to sue the city.

The Angels commissioned Arnold Steinberg & Associates Inc. for the poll, which surveyed 265 registered voters early this month.

“The people think the Angels are right,” said Michael Schreter, executive vice president of the Angels’ parent company, Golden West Baseball Co. “The Angels have been telling the City Council this is the way the citizens believe. This is not an opinion of ours, but actual objective research.”

But City Manager William O. Talley said, “We’re . . . a little saddened that the Angels are resorting to this kind of activity.”
