For a few hours, it looked like Humphrey the wandering whale had a successor, but it was apparently a wiser whale that ventured inland this time. The baby gray whale forged into the Carquinez Strait and lingered near the mouth of the Napa River for a few hours Friday, retracing the early route of its celebrated predecessor. It initially appeared headed upstream toward the Sacramento River Delta, where Humphrey ventured for a time last fall to gain international attention and a nickname. But the whale then turned around and headed back out toward San Francisco Bay on the afternoon tide. The whale, estimated at 25 to 30 feet long, had its progress monitored by the Coast Guard and boat operators during its frolic.
