General Motors Corp. said Friday that it is recalling 764,700 cars and small vans to modify or replace components in the safety belt systems or steering gear assemblies.

GM said it is advising owners of about 738,000 1983, 1984 and 1985 Chevrolet Camaros and Pontiac Firebirds to bring their autos to their dealers to modify the seat belt system by installing a new retaining spring clip or replacing the retractor assembly.

GM spokesman David Hudgens said the auto maker has received 11 reports of injuries in seven accidents, ranging from minor to moderate, because of the defective belt system, which does not tighten up the belt on sharp stops or impact.

GM also is recalling 26,700 1985-model Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari vans to replace or modify the steering gear housings because they could fracture. No accidents or injuries have been reported.

All repairs or adjustments on both types of vehicles will be free, Hudgens said.
