Phase 1 of Griffin Towers, a $90-million office complex in South Coast Metro’s Hutton Center in Santa Ana, was topped out in a fog so thick that many of the participants had difficulty seeing the ceremony.

The first phase consists of a 12-story, 267,122-square-foot, office building and connecting, 14,802-square-foot pavilion. The steel frame is expected to be completed at the end of June, with completion of the entire phase scheduled for the spring of 1987.

The seven-acre complex, destined to be Orange County’s largest office structure with more than 500,000 square feet of rentable space, will feature twin 12-story, polished Napoleon-red granite towers, joined by a three-story skylighted atrium pavilion.

Construction financing of $41 million has been arranged by First Interstate Mortgage Co. for the first phase.
