Italian driver Paolo Gargano was killed Saturday when his Lola crashed on a curve at almost 100 m.p.h. during time trials for an international hill-climb event at Monte Sant’ Angelo, Italy.

Gargano, 44, a former Italian hill-climb champion from nearby Bari, died instantly of a fracture of the cervical vertebrae.

Authorities said Gargano, one of the favorites in the 12th edition of the climbing event, went into the curve at about 100 m.p.h. and apparently failed to brake in time.
