Chrysler said it will spend $866 million on the plants in Fenton, Mo., a suburb of St. Louis, to prepare them for assembly of minivans and a new intermediate-size luxury car. Plans call for five new buildings and “an incredible array of ultrasophisticated equipment,” a Chrysler official said. After the renovation, Plant No. 1 will produce a front-wheel-drive, intermediate-size automobile that would begin coming off the assembly line in October and would be called the Chrysler LeBaron. Plant No. 2 will produce Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager minivans for the 1987 model year.
