The key suspect in the April 5 bombing of a West Berlin discotheque that killed two people, including an American, told West German police that he got the explosives from a Syrian-sponsored group, Newsweek reported. Claiming proof of Libyan involvement in the bombing, the United States raided Libya last month in retaliation. The Syrian connection sent U.S. experts “scrambling to find ways to punish Damascus,” but Syria’s formidable defenses, political clout and proximity to the Soviet Union discouraged an attack, the magazine said. The group was identified as the Syrian-run Arab-German Friendship League.
