Gusting winds kept speeds down for Indianapolis 500 practice, but defending champion Danny Sullivan and track record-holder Pancho Carter joined the growing list of drivers to top 200 m.p.h. and Rick Mears improved his best lap to more than 211.
Only late in the practice session did the speeds begin to climb, and Mears, who earlier turned a lap at 207, went back onto the track and turned a quick circuit at 211.118.
Top speed after three days of practice for the May 25 race remained 211.764, recorded Sunday by Mario Andretti.
