HOUSE AUTHORIZES CHAPIN MEDAL
The House has passed and sent to the Senate a bill authorizing the minting of a gold medal in honor of Harry Chapin, the balladeer who spent much of his life campaigning against world hunger.
Chapin, who died in an automobile accident in 1981, used his name and fortune to begin a grassroots U.S. anti-hunger effort, giving scores of benefit concerts to help raise money for the cause.
The legislation authorizes $20,000 for the production of gold medals, and the President would be authorized to present one to Chapin’s family. Bronze medals also would be struck and sold to recover the costs.
