House Passes $2.2-Billion Budget for Coast Guard
The House passed a $2.2-billion 1987 authorization bill for the Coast Guard on Tuesday that includes a 10% increase in the service’s operational budget.
The bill, passed on a 374-0 vote, would authorize a total of 39,200 military positions, a slight increase, and would set operating expenses at $1.86 billion, up 10%.
The service’s procurement budget would be reduced from the current $564 million to $300 million. The bill, which goes to the Senate, would also bar construction of new Coast Guard vessels in foreign shipyards and allow vessels seized in drug raids to be given to educational groups.
